Tree Planting Hands-on Activity
Gulayan sa Paaralan 2020 and 2021
I. INTRODUCTION
As part of the implementation of DepEd Memorandum No. 293, s. 2007, Paranaque National High School-Baclaran launched its implementation of Gulayan sa Paaralan on January 24, 2020. Our school has been very active in supporting this school greening campaign by giving budget from school MOOE to the creation of a committee to implement this project.
It encourages and promotes the students to plant green leafy vegetables to fruit-bearing trees. We allow them to bring their seedlings and plants from their homes to replant and cultivate them to the open spaces in the school. Some donated seeds and seedlings, while others brought their recyclable materials from home like empty water containers and old vehicle tires.
We planted other kinds of vegetables and fruit-bearing trees like bitter gourd (ampalaya), string beans (sitaw), okra, tomatoes, coffee tree, avocado, banana, and mango trees.

IV. NARRATIVE
Paranaque National High School -Baclaran (PNHS-Baclaran) successfully launched the Vegetable Growing and Tree Planting Activity 2020 on January 24, 2020.
PNHS-Baclaran teachers, non-teaching personnel, administrators, SPTA officers, and selected students joined hands on January 24, 2020 in launching the Vegetable and Tree Planting Activity. The brainchild of our principal, Dr. Gerry C. Catchillar, who is not only known for being organized and systematic but also for his love of plants, cleanliness, and order. The said activity was in support to the government’s effort to mitigate climate change and promote food security in schools and uphold consciousness among government employees and students. Mr. Jessie B. Laurea, PNHS-BFEA Vice President, served as the in-charge of the event with the help of the Technical Working Group.
Each section (from Grade 7-12) planted one (1) tree seedling and two (2) vegetable seedlings while every department (teaching), including the non-teaching personnel, planted two (2) tree seedlings. In addition, the participants placed bamboo enclosures to protect the plants. Moreover, the Supreme Student Government (SSG) prepared color-coded flag marks and put them beside the plants.
TREE PLANTING HANDS-ON ACTIVITY (JUNE 13-17, 2022)
As a form of support for the Executive Order No. 26 known as National Greening Program of the Philippines, s. On June 24, 2022 (Friday), Paranaque National High School-Baclaran will organize a project called “Tree Planting Hands-On Activity”, coordinated by partner clubs and organizations under the direction of the Campus Integrity Crusaders.
This project aims to make every student aware of how crucial trees are to both humankind and the environment. Mr. Jessie Bahague Laurea, the Campus Integrity Crusaders (CIC) adviser, physically orientated how everyone will benefit from this, particularly the school, and how they may contribute to making it happen. He asserts that trees are the primary source of oxygen that the entire Earth needs. It enhances the beauty of our surroundings and provides shade from the sun’s glaring heat. Their roots enter the soil deeply to stabilize and hold the soil in place, reducing the rate of soil erosion brought on by the action of rain and water bodies. He assisted and showed the volunteers how to properly plant bare root tree seedlings, which are most frequently utilized for big planting initiatives as they are affordable and simple to handle. PNHS students took part in the tree planting exercise by delivering seedlings and preparing the soil for planting.
Different kinds of seedlings were needed from each grade level, such as pechay, tomatoes, oregano, and many more. A long procedure that introduces new plant materials to meet specific resource concerns begins with the collection of seeds. The key to addressing these resource issues is making the effort to pick out superior plants and gather the seed. CIC members collected recycled water bottles within the school grounds; some were brought by other organizations from their homes, in order to put fresh healthy soil inside of them and labeled which seed would be put on the actual day of the planting.
Volunteers cleaned out all of the rubbish from the locations where the seeds will be sown. To prevent the rocks from affecting the plant’s growth, they separated them from the soil and used them to divide each plant area. The soil was then loosened by digging holes, which allowed the roots to spread more easily. They take great care when digging the holes for the plants as a hole that is too small could choke the roots or impede plant development. An excessively deep hole may prevent a seed from ever germinating in the case of a seed.
After weeks of bringing seeds and preparing things up, the participants continue to maintain its cleanliness and organization. More than 50 seedlings and plants of various types have been gathered. Even so, it was a fruitful endeavor. All of the participants are pleased, as they view that planting trees fosters environmental stewardship and introduces the community to the advantages of greenery.
CONDUCT OF TREE PLANTING HANDS-ON ACTIVITY ON FRIDAY, (JUNE 24, 2022)
A tree-planting activity was held on June 24, 2022, at Paranaque National High School-Baclaran.
